Schatz Bearing 40th Year Anniversary

40 Years In Business and Going Strong!

At the end of 2021, Schatz Bearing celebrated its 40th year in business and has seen continuous growth since, with a bright future ahead. The company was founded in December 1981, at that time only making ABEC 1 and unground bearings. Throughout their years in business, they have weathered the ups and downs of the SARS outbreak, the financial crisis in the late 1990s, 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Focus on continuous improvement has led to steady growth for Schatz.

At all levels, the company has completely transformed since the days the doors first opened. Maintaining state-of-the-art equipment and keeping up with technological improvements have been key. The material that is used, gaging, size range, and precision levels have all improved to accommodate the requirements of numerous product lines, including aerospace bearings, space bearings, bearings for semiconductor equipment, medical bearings, and custom bearings. Personnel changes, with a strong focus on engineering, have helped to expand the capabilities and the workforce has been instrumental in the forward movement of the company, positioning them as experts in the field of precision ball bearings.

Schatz New Aerospace Bearing Seal diagram

Schatz New Aerospace Bearing Seal

Advanced Seal for Aerospace Bearings

Schatz Bearing Corp. has introduced an advanced seal for bearings used in aerospace applications.

Standard aircraft bearing PTFE based seals are inadequate for many aerospace bearing applications because they do not offer positive lip contact at the sealing surface. In order to alleviate this problem, Schatz has developed a lip contacting seal that utilizes an advanced Fluoroelastomer material. The seal has far superior sealing characteristics when operated in environments with fluid or dust and dirt contamination… Continue Reading »

Schatz Space Bearings Support Mars Perseverance Rover Mission

Schatz Bearing Corporation, based in Poughkeepsie, NY, has been a manufacturer of bearings for over 100 years. From its AS9100 and Nadcap certified facility, Schatz provides bearings and custom components for a wide range of industries and applications, including mission-critical Space operations.

Most recently, Schatz Bearing supplied two duplex-sets of Thin-Section bearing designs for use in an articulating arm application for the Perseverance Rover, which landed successfully on Mars on February 18, 2021. The mission of Perseverance is to investigate signs of ancient life and collect samples of rock and regolith (loose rocky material) for a possible return to Earth. Perseverance was launched on July 30, 2020, as part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the Red Planet.

Schatz Additive Manufactured Bearings

Schatz Additive Manufactured Bearings Offer Many Benefits

As a bearing manufacturer and custom bearing designer for over 40 years, we’ve had the privilege to supply precision bearings to some of the most performance-focused companies in the world from our AS9100 Rev D / ISO9001:2015 certified facility in Poughkeepsie, NY. We have always relied on innovation to stay ahead of the curve and provide our customers with the highest quality bearings for their specific uses. Recently, that has extended into additive manufactured bearings as clients have required bearings with more complex geometries and next-level parts and assemblies. We are proud to have been featured in the February 2021 issue of FORGE Magazine for our additive manufacturing for bearings.

Unlike traditional manufacturing, where you take away material through milling, machining, carving, shaping, or other means, additive manufacturing creates objects by adding material. In additive manufacturing, computer-aided-design (CAD) software or 3D object scanners are used to deposit material, layer by layer, in precise geometric shapes to create objects.

Advantages of Additive Manufactured Bearings

By layering alloys in our bearing production through additive manufacturing, we have been able to manage thermal gradients and resist corrosion and fatigue, which contribute to superior performance over the life of the bearing. The stainless steel, case hardened, and high fatigue resistance materials used during additive manufacturing are especially suitable for difficult applications where corrosion, high impact/shock loading, fatigue, and low or marginal lubricants are a factor.

Additionally, additive manufactured bearings multiply the value of a bearing system when there is a need to incorporate mounting features or mating components. Flanges with mounting holes; notches, tabs, and grooves in bearing holes to facilitate mounting; or integrated locking or preloading features are just some of the options that additive manufacturing enables us to fabricate seamlessly.

When unique or difficult geometry on the outside of a bearing presents challenges to traditional manufacturing methods such as machining, additive manufacturing is less labor-intensive and carries lower manufacturing costs. Plus, optimization of the bearing geometry also provides weight savings while maintaining structural integrity.

For more information on our additive manufacturing precision bearings and components visit us at Whether your requirements are for low or high volumes, custom designs, or extremely clean bearing components, we have the experience needed to meet the challenge.
